HELP! EGS line disturbed - No CAN Communication
Good Day!
My X5 went on Limp mode and Trans fail safe flashed on cluster. Died on uphill while I was flooring it around 90kmh. Got stuck on a very dangerous bend and had to get the missus out and placed her safe and secure....she's not happy! Tried to start... nothing! Tried calling for a tow truck and unfortunately they said they'll be here in an hour and 45 minutes..ugh! So I checked and lifted the bonnet....motor looks good and no funny smell. No diagnostic pc with me at the time.... After 40 minutes waiting ....tried again....fired up and started...but trifecta lights.....TMPS .....engine light...airbag light...suspension inactive..and so on...sheesh! So i drove really slow and avoided traffic and took the back roads. Finally got home and loaded INPA and scanned for errors..... No Communications on DME - LEW - DSC - etc... But cluster and and other modules not on the Power Train CANBUS all working. INPA IM readout ---- came out as EGS line disturbed - No CAN Communication. First checked relay and fuses...ALL good. Battery and alternator - OK ---voltage stable Disconnected the following in order: 1 Steering angle sensor - no good 2. ABS module - no good 3. DME - no good not yet done: Mechatronic connector YAW sensor other modules? So tired and frustrated ....and will check again tomorrow morning. Please help this is the first time ....Betsy(X5) let me down. Sorry for the long post...:( |

What is the exact error from INPA? Here is a picture of mine when the ABS Module went bad...Attachment 78731

@Purplecty
My ISTA laptop is not working and cannot run diagnostic... Used my INPA and BMW scanner and almost the same errors except for the radio - Seat - DSP. I've the disconnected three modules and will carry on troubleshooting early morning tomorrow. ABS module already disconnected.... but still no CAN..... |
Post pics of the INPA Errors

Any other problems prior to this like hard or long cranking for the engine to start?
|
@upallnight
No issues on cranking and starting....fires up straight away BUT running rich/rough idling due to limp mode. Disconnected Yaw sensor-- no good Still Canbus issue - no communication Just stopped for lunch....and will disconnect soon Mechatronic connector. |

Something else is the problem for the rich/rough running. Try this and tell me what happen, Pull down the visor and open the mirror cover so that the vanity lights come on. Anything unusual? Turn on the radio does it play? |
@upallnight
Thanks! I've tried this ...nothing unusual...I've got NBT retrofit on my X5 though Anyways this is were I'm at now.: Disconnected the following in order and still no Canbus 1 Steering angle sensor 2. ABS module 3. DME 4. Mechatronic connector 5. Yaw Sensor 6. Valvetronic module 7. ..........Have I'missed out on any module? Working Instrument cluster was temporary disconnected ...still no luck. I don't know what's causing my no communication...there must be an open or short in the PT CAN Next up.....Grounding Points...Anyone can help with their location? My X5 is a mess now....plastic parts are everywhere......big mess.:( I need to get ISTA working ...just to rule out INPA and BMW Scanner.....and K-Dcan cables. |
i had same problem,, change your transmission oil thermstat (do to transmision oil getting to hot cause me to go to limp mode), i also change my pans service and filter have not had a problem since
theres a place in jacksonville fl that re builds LCM for 130 bucks called module experts ask for andy bell if you need parts call North side imports ask for adam my bro in law i get all my parts from him and then theres auto truck and accessiors in palm beach florida too that did my abs Module that i found on ebay |
@tmat1977
Ok....will look into the this. Not sure though of location.....don't know if my 4.8is has one? |
hi, Having a similar but related problem on my 4.6is, spent about 30 hours troubleshooting and diagnostics but I can't pin point a mechanical vs a electronic error and can't find what's causing the code and failsafe program.
00008D IKE: EGS signal line disturbed https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...-replaced.html What is worse, we have about 20 different threads of this error code on various BMW forums, across several languages and wait for it... spent many hours trying to find and search this code. i haven't seen any shred of proof of a definite cause, explanation, and solution. not one owner came back and reported the exact cause and what they did to fix it... they ended up by changing a lot of parts until something worked but they didn't know what it was. ? one guy said weak battery or alternator output. if your EGS module sees less than 10 volts on crank it can cause the code. but in my case, i pinned the input voltage right at the module and my cranking minimum was 11.8 volts or higher. |
@aureliusmax
Thanks for that link...nice info from RRPhil. At the moment I can't do diagnostic due to PT Can down. I'm just disconnecting module/s to find the culprit. My Inpa and BMW scanner won't read anything ....don't even know where and what module to pull-out and replace. I'm checking Ground Point Connections as of this morning. |
If you have a scope you can connect it to the DLC link under the dash. You can connect to pin 6 and 14 on the DLC connector and observe the scope. Here's a video on what I am talking about.

You may be able to find a mobile mechanic such as Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostic (see his youtube channel) that has the equipment and knowledge to help you with diagnosising your problem.

Thanks @upallnight for video links!
Once I finished and happy with grounding ....It'll be my next move. Scoping the Canbus.....thought I could get away with it by process of elimination/disconnection. |

@Clavurion
Thanks for the link! |
Just letting you know....No fix yet :(
Been doing a whole house renovations.... Wifey wants the renovations done asap....she said no budget for toys this year!...(yes dear:rofl:) X5 is currently in storage and I just don't have time to sort the issue. I will be looking into it getting sorted maybe around October - November... and was forced to selling two of my other project cars due to space :thumbdown I may not be here for awhile...but will try to check-in.....whenever the wifey is not supervising me! :D |
I have also had this same issue on my 05 4.8is. Driving uphill at about 70kmph and switched to TFS mode, thishappened to me twice. Luckily I always carry my foxwell in the car and I managed to clear (most) codes on the roadside and carry on my way.
I have since changed my transfer case actuator (I already knew this was faulty from testing) it could be totally unrelated but it hasn't happened since (the TFS error that is) I still have the EGS line disturbed error though and I know I do have issues with my EGS module - Sometimes this just returns no comms from the foxwell scanner and INPA. I also have an issue with my TRS which intermittently wont allow the car to start in park but switching through the gears and resting back in N fixes this. I believe on our models both the EGS and TRS sit inside of the transmission so you will need to drop the transmission and open it up to replace/investigate either of these I have read in a few places that the EGS modules can be a bit iffy so that's what I'm going to blame. |
