Broke my fron driveshaft splines YAY!
SOO, is there a need for a DIY video or written down instructions?
I feel like this is something that happens a lot. I could also offer my services to board members.:dunno: Let me know what you think. |
I haven't seen a good how to on xo yet. It seems bmw didn't make the shaft long enough to engage well into the TC.
Signify sells a kit that replaces the end to clean up the chewed up splines but also makes it like an inch longer. Another kit is two parts making replacement easier since apparently not enough room between TC and differential to fit the drive shaft |

Is this on the '01 3.0? Never heard of the splines going on a 4.8iS (or any LCI E53...)
|
Agreed I think BMW made a longer drive prop to squash the problem on newer models

I have two 3.0 '01. Quite happy no short shaft problem. I'm going to try to get a part number off mine next time I'm under.

And that's saying something about the poor design [the issue showing up on the 3.0].
Shouldn't it also be showing up on the 4.4 (early years) and 4.6? Or was there already a new design in use by then? |

Drive shaft assy front L=774MM That's what realoem has for my part number. I'm pretty confident I saw a different part with a different length but the "supersedes" part has the same length so overall length might not change just how far it goes Intp the TC. Somebody sells a spacer that goes on the guibo to push the spline into the TC but I think there is a stop for a seal on the shaft so not sure how that would work. If my shafts ever start to slip I would modify the end so it can go in farther and add the spacer vs. replace the shaft (I don't have welding capacity or I'd get the fixed end) |
