EGS Signal

Hi all,

I have been doing some reading on the transmission range sensor/inhibitor as I was absolutely certain this was the culprit for an intermittent no start and trans failsafe issue I've been having - The issue is 2 fold (and may be 2 separate issues) - also worth noting they both seem to be more regular in the wet.

2005 - E53 4.8is

1- sometimes she just won't turn over, the mirrors unfold and there are no warning lights but she just wont turn over. I fiddle about with the gear selector and eventually she turns over and starts with no issue (not sure if its my fiddling that actually fixes this.

2 - On 2 occasions I have been driving around 60kmph and it just blips into Trans failsafe, when I pull over shut down and go to restart, issue one occurs.

I don't think this is a starter system issue, battery and ignition switch are a few months old and have tested all components of starting system.

This pointed me to the TRS/inhibitor - I got under the car today in search of this and discovered I have the ZF6hp26 transmission and from my understanding the TRS is actually inside the sump cover. I'm now thinking its unlikely this is the culprit

I have the following codes from my Foxwell NT510 Scan
EGS
4F7A - EGS: Signal from transfer box is faulty
51A7 - No Message (engine speed), receiver EGS, transmitter DME-DDE

KOMBI Instrument Cluster
8D - IKE: EGS signal line disturbed
IKE: speed signal tD from engine control unit

There is also a DSC error for engine speed signal - this points me in the direction of a loom issue, possibly a corroded connector, or damaged harness somewhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this or could point me in the direction of the offending item so I can put eyes on it?

I have read through this thread https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...-solved-5.html which looks to be similar fault codes but different symptoms which was never solved.

As always I REALLY appreciate the knowledge you might be able to share

Cheers

Start by checking the connection at the transmission. Disconnect and have a good look at all the pins and sockets. I have seen some corrosion at that connection causing issues before.

from what I've known so far, since I have this same issue

EGS signal line disturbed is actually a canbus signal interference problem caused by corrosion on connector contacts or a faulty module (one of 5 I believe) that is sending a bad signal, the EGS module detects the bad signal and immediately shuts the transmission down and gives you a locked final drive gear which has no torque and basically you go nowhere.
but what if you cleaned all the corrosion, electrically tested all the circuits and still have this lingering problem ? Then it gets tricky.

my issue is a work-in-progress and I've yet to solve it fully but once I do will be updating my thread for this problem. the transmission electrical engineers designed this feature deliberately thinking it would be useful in the event of a disconnect electrically from the EGS, but they should have designed a failsafe system to select a second gear, like other manufacturers do.

I've encountered many people hit-and-running their threads with this problem who never return to describe the end result of what happened, what was done to solve this. Again, a community forum is only as strong as the weakest link and if people get lazy and don't update troubleshooting threads to the conclusion we see what goes on so often.

Thanks @aureliusmax - Sorry to see you haven't managed to get to the bottom of this one yet!

Although the transmissions are different models it feels like I have a less progressed version of your issue so will keep following closely. Definitely think it's electrical and not mechanical.

This may be a total rookie question but - I am having trouble locating the EGS module, I have looked under the ebox on the pass side near the windscreen trim (RHD car) and could only find the DME and the VVT control units. Am I missing something or is the EGS module somewhere else on this model?

your EGS is integrated into the side of the transmission on the 4.8's

Thanks again for the help,

Wondering if anyone has any experience/could point me to a guide on getting to the EGS on my model to test its function, does this mean removing the transmission? Or can it be got to by removing the oil pan?

Also if the EGS is integrated is it likely it can be replaced without replacing the whole transmission? hence why I cant find a part number on ETK

Thanks again

Update - I have now lost all comms with the EGS module, the foxwell nt510 will no longer scan the EGS it gives a no connection error when attempting to scan, plus side I no longer have error codes but assuming this will be short lived

Update here fir those following.

I switched out my transfer case motor, I already knew this had failed and was on the list. In doing this I managed to clear ALL CODES!! with the exception of the steering angle sensor code which i think is a hardware issue I’ll need to solve.

3 months of worry, issue free motoring down and the no start and trans fail safe error is back.

At this stage I’m thinking my only option is to drop the tranny out and look at replacing the TRS and EGS

Open to any other suggestions though

had similar problem, engine not started, was no communication with EGS, was blowed fuse no. 5 in the glovebox. Problem short circuit in transmission connector was in oil because of seal.

So I think my local indy has fixed this! Not sure how to update the thread to resolved but might be useful info for others with similar issues.

He had the car for about a week and after pulling modules one by one to test linked the issue back to the Integrated chassis module. Word for word from my invoice
"diagnosing intermittent no start fault and various other diagnostic faults. Including EGS signal errors, speed sensor signal errors. Eventually found the ICM integrated chassis module at fault, removed and opened up unit and discovered a number of cracked solder joints. Repaired and cleaned circuit board and re-fitted. Tested and no faults present, road tested for 100km over 2 days and no further issues"

In total this diagnosis and repair cost me just over $1,300 AUD - I've had the car back for 2 days and still no issues, I'm 80% happy its money well spent and will be 100% happy if its not returned in 6 months!
