Mine just came back because of that, check your spare time and make sure all the ties are fastened

Check the rubber bump stops on your rear hatch. You can adjust them up a little and see if that fixes the noise.

I agree. Mine was doing the same thing until the stops were adjusted.

First use the search feature because there are plenty of threads about this.

Secondly; try putting some felt ontop of the rubber stops because they shrink up with the weather change. It's kindly like having an extra absorber.

Is it a hard edged sounding rattle or does it sound like something is flapping?

Also agree. My 2-week-old 2006 X5 started making the same noises;   - adjusted the bump stops a couple of turns each (careful not to adjust them out too much, otherwise hatch will be hard to close / or worse, the rear inner lights won't go off & drain yr battery) and.... Voilá - no more noise :) :) :) (for now.........)

I'd stay away from felt-taping as long as possible, for as long as the bump-stop adjustments do the job of killing the noise.

Cheers,

Hmmm.. I've had the same problem.. New 4.4 w/ sport package - rattle from the back (right) rear area. Actually sat back there with the G/F driving and of course, no rattle.. Hear it every day. Checked the tire, no. Checked the plastic slide that folds over itself on the bottom part of the hatch, no. Tried the shades - rear and sides, no. This sux.

bump stops, cargo cover, spare-tire well...

My tailgate was rattling and adjusting the bump stops seems to have tightened things up a lot (thank you forums). When it was loose I also ran into an issue where when pulling out of my garage (which is at a light down angle) the "TRUNK OPEN" msg would flash and i'd have to get out and make sure the tailgate was securely closed.

Still have some rattles from the back occasionally, but I think it's that infernal cargo cover. On my '02 it's the non-retractable kind which just manages to get in the way and make a lot of noise. :)

I'd check the bump stops, the cargo cover (if you have one) and the spare tire well for anything that may be causing noise.... I know how frustrating it can be, I have a small rattle coming out of the bezel on the in-dash CD player. There's nothing more infuriating than trying to enjoy the drive as you hear a constant buzzzz buzzzzz buzzzzzzzzzz.

Could it be a loose/vibrating license plate frame? I've had this problem before on other vehicles.
