Resonator Delete Pictures and Video

6 Attachment(s)
Finally got my camera back. Here's a few pictures of the new straight pipes that were welded in place of the resonator. There's also a link to youtube for a video clip.

Here's the video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=571NmzXNWJM

panda8875 12-19-2006 09:19 PM

SWEET!!! Will it pass smog?

-P

Quicksilver 12-19-2006 09:31 PM

Nice and loud but too loud for me. Congrats.

MatzoBallsX5 12-19-2006 09:35 PM

To be honest, I'm not sure about the smog test. I'm from Colorado but I live in California, we just have an emissions test, not a smog test. Since it passed in Denver, I don't have to get it done again. It should though, nothing really changed beyond a lot of noise.

panda8875 12-19-2006 09:37 PM

MatzoBallsX5...let me know your findings. I'm interested in doing my conversion.

Thanks - P

MatzoBallsX5 12-19-2006 09:42 PM

What do you want to know?

SilverBullet 12-19-2006 09:46 PM

That is my only worry about doing the resonator delete is the smog test.

panda8875 12-19-2006 09:47 PM

CA has a smog/emissions test every year, plus a visual inspection. Not sure how the switch over from state to state. I uncle from Hawaii had to have his vehicles smogged to pass CA std for reg tags.

I can either register my car in Nevada or Pennsylvania.

MatzoBallsX5 12-19-2006 09:51 PM

I don't think I can help you guys there, I'm not planning on registering my car in CA. I don't see why there would be any problem though. I'll search the site and see if I can find anything.

MatzoBallsX5 12-19-2006 09:52 PM

Plus, they gave me my resonator and it wouldn't be that difficult to reverse the resonator and the straight pipes in case it wouldn't pass the smog test.

I was reading about something regarding emissions for CA and it said that if your exhaust is too loud, that it would not past. I am not sure if this is true.

MatzoBallsX5 12-19-2006 09:54 PM

http://www.xoutpost.com/x3-e83-forum/...Resonator+Smog

That says there isn't a problem with it. But it's only some guys word. I don't think the noise is a problem considering all the exhaust systems out here on trucks and whatnot.

ljnlaw 12-19-2006 10:08 PM

I live in PA and have the straight pipes not a problem here.

MatzoBallsX5 12-20-2006 01:27 AM

It didn't seem like there should be a problem since there are more cars out there that are louder than what I have now.

Sweetbimmer 12-20-2006 11:58 AM

Sounds real nice....What did it cost and did you notice a big sound change improvement.??:)

catvega 12-20-2006 12:18 PM

Like how it sounds, but personaly I would prefer that on a smaller car, not an SAV
Congrats..:)

dr.jay 12-20-2006 01:01 PM

Looks nice how much did it run you?

MatzoBallsX5 12-20-2006 02:20 PM

It was $80 total. The guy basically charged me for the straight pipes, he said he wouldn't charge me to remove the resonator. I can notice a huge difference in sound. In the morning's when it's cold, there's a low rumble until the engine heats up. After that, when I'm in a low gear it sounds exceptional and if I floor it to get ahead of someone, you can really hear it. Although, there really wasn't a big difference in sound volume inside the car other than the rumble you can feel. It was a great mod for the price in my opinion.

Sweetbimmer 02-02-2007 04:00 PM

That sounds great how much did it cost?

MatzoBallsX5 02-02-2007 06:41 PM

80 to do it all

...for what it's worth, I did the resonator delete last year, just smogged it last week, and the tech didn't bat an eye....so much for the visual inspection....passed with numbers comprable to it's numbers 2 years ago when I bought it....without a doubt, the best useless mod for the money....

Mi5 02-03-2007 02:13 AM

Sounds like a lawnmower when revving up.

aus 02-03-2007 03:09 PM

There are no issues with smog testing and a resonator delete.

I had an X-pipe put in for $200 total.

toohotdoc 03-01-2007 01:36 PM

not so good

that just doesnt sound like a healthy sav to tell you guys the truth, but i keep hearing that this mod is one thing that alot of guys are doing, so i just think that the video you made of the red 4.6 needs to be redone, because if it sounds like that then i guess you went for the wrong option my friend.....lets see more videos, peace out...!

vinuneuro 03-01-2007 02:35 PM

The resonator is only there to reduce noise level. It has NO impact on emissions like a catalytic converter does. Removing the resonator wouldn't increase the amount of noise, enough to get you in trouble, either.

ljnlaw 03-01-2007 02:48 PM

To each his own, I did the mod with straight pipes and I love it.

Uptempo115 03-01-2007 03:07 PM

Anyone do this to a 4.4i?

Davud 04-05-2007 09:09 AM

we are desperately waiting for answers...what is better for 4.4 x-pipe or straight pipes?

I'd like to know also!!

aus 04-05-2007 09:53 AM

The change in sound is pretty subtle. The only time you really notice it is from the OUTSIDE when the engine's cold. I sounds a little mechanical; but once ithe engine/exhaust is warmed up, the sound is just a little deeper. My wifes only noticed it after I mentioned it to her. It's not a huge difference.

scirocco33 04-06-2007 08:17 PM

I just had straight pipes installed on my 2001 4.4 today.

I agree that the change is sound is pretty subtle, but that is exactly what I was looking for. The sound is a little louder and just a little deeper.

X-pipe or straight…neither is going to boost HP or torque.

BMW exhausts are very well designed and the aftermarket exhausts mainly change the sound and look.

Sadly, gone are the days (like on my old 1980 Scirocco) when an exhaust manifold, high flow cat and good aftermarket system was good for a 15% increase in HP

2002Silver4.6is 12-01-2007 02:03 AM

That video clip is awsome!!! I think I need the straight pipes with my Supersprint Exhaust!!

Hummm... Monday when it is getting a few things done in the shop perhaps?? :smokin:

chubyball 12-01-2007 09:41 AM

I suspect most of the noise comes from the engine, but not from the pipe. May be you should remove the the muffler instead of the resonator.

One time, I got hit from the back of my Civic and muffler was dangled, sound was great after I removed it. It was too damn noise for me, I couldn't hear my own music from my own the car. It was fun drive around for couple days like that though.

I have the Eisenmann race exhaust on mine, which I love, and am curious how the sound compares. If it's similar, it's definitely a much cheaper route. Are you in LA?

I believe Matzo sold his X5 a little while back.
