Car shut off while making a fast U-turn...

The other day I was in a hurry to work and while driving my X5 I realized that I forgot something I needed for work. I quickly pull to the right a little then made a hard left turn to make the U-turn because the street was kind of small, then my car just shut off after then turn was completed. I manage to pull over without power steering and turn the ignition off then started it back up again.

I didn't know what was the reason was but I asked my older brother because he goes to BMW step program school. He asked me if I was low on gas and I told him I had probally a little less then a quarter to empty. He then told me it was because how the BMW gas tank is designed and how the X5 has a lot of body roll making such a hard turn. He said something about the fuel pump is located to the right side of the tank so when I made a hard right then a hard left, it made the fuel go to the left where the pump doesn't get any fuel so it cause the car to shut off..

Have this every happen to anyone?? I learned not to go on with a low tank and not to make such a hard u-turn and I could have flip the X5..

yep! it happend to me twice in the 10 months i've owned the vehicle.
after the second time i took it in and surprise (surprise!) there was a bulletin on this particular problem.

ETA: i dont think its a gas tank issue. the first time it happend to me i was heading down the shore with a full tank of gas.

there is thread (i think) i started talking about this issue some time ago. let me see what i can find.

this happened to me right after I filled up my gas tank.

it just shut off and all the lights in the dash were on.. weird.

I remember hearing something about this problem a year ago or so. I seem to remember it only being an issue with the 3.0i motor. Anybody had this happen with a V8 motor?

It happened in my 05 4.4.. I was making a really fast U-turn and was low on gas at that time.. All the lights and radio was on when the engine shut off. I didn't shake or anything, I didn't even realize the engine was off until I tried to gas it but nothing happened and no power steering..

It does not seem like the gas level would have anything at all to do with a problem like this. Even if you did something to quickly shift all the fuel to the side of the tank opposite the fuel pump, there would be enough fuel already in the pipeline to keep the engine running for 20 seconds or more. Also the pump is in a well that is in the very bottom of the tank resovoir. Its like that for a reason. That reason is so the pump does not suck in any air if the majority of the fuel is displaced away from the pump. Someone said there is a TSB on this issue. I would certainly bring it to the dealer and let them deal with it. Does not look like you are the only one to report such an occurence.

Well on my Honda BigRed, it sometimes shuts off when i do a sharp turn because there is a faulty connection where the key goes in. So when i turn the wire is pushed and it shorts out. Thought it may help :p

Does the X5 have any kind of crash sensors that are designed to quickly cut off the engine in a crash to prevent fire, etc.? Perhaps these sensors could get confused by g forces that quickly shift from one direction then into a hard turn? If so, definitely a bug that should be fixed.
