4.4 X5'ers you should check your hoses that connect to your PVC unit..

I have a 00 4.4 with 58K miles and the SES light came on and it had code 1159 and 1161. I have a extend warranty so I took it to a local BMW repair shop they charged me $80.00 for 2 hoses and $160 for 2 hours to replace the hoses that go to the PVC type unit on the engine block.. NOT covered under warranty.. I sure wished I pulled the cover off the engine to see for myself before I took to the repair shop... .. :tsk: I told them just to leave it and I would do the work myself but they where going to charge me an $85 testing fee!!! :wow: So I bit the bullet and paid the big bucks.. The thing that surprised me the most is the condition of the hoses they where falling apart from the oil and heat.. I've never seen a 4 year old hose just fall apart in my hands before... Just the best for BMW.. I love my X5

I have a 1970 Cougar XR7 with still some of the same hoses when the car was new and they haven't fallen apart like the ones I saw that came off my X5.. hoses deteriorated into same pieces.... $hitty or cheap rubber was used..

Hope this is not the same story as with mine. I too have a 4.4 2000 60k miles and the upper coolant hose broke. They replaced it and one week later it was the big hose at the bottom of the radiator which broke. The cause of the problem was over heating due to either the water pump or thermostat. Result possible blown head gasket. The car has been in the garage for 10 days waiting for parts. From the last news they are changing radiator, thermostat, waterpump and will check the compressions to look at any other possible damage. I had no warning at all. The temp indicator never displayed anything wrong. Mine also is under warranty.

A previous thread mentioned the water pump goes beween 72k & 84k - now the hose thing - am at 45k - will have to ask the dealer, where it is at right now, to inspect - thanks for the heads up

Same here, just got off about $125 to replace some dry rotted hoses...sucks!

See Stlr visit thread - hoses are way in the back between engine and firewall - very little relief from engine compartment heat and the coolant running thru them - should be added to prevent maint list

the same thing just happened to me havent fixed it yet, dose any one know how hard it would be to do it your selfcause the hoses are $10.00 each but the labor kills u..

Just picked my 01, 4.4 up (48554 miles) last Wednesday. Same fix, SES light on, dealer replaced two hoses, #11-15-7-556-837 & #11-15-7-556-838 $24.66 each. However, $301 in labor. They told me same thing, not covered by CPO warranty that I have. Oh well, runs great now....

Do you guys think these problems will occur on the newer models like the 04s and 05s with the Vavletronic?
