Brake pedal goes to the floor

I've just changed my front discs and pads. Now I'm unsure if this was happening before I changed the pads but when the engine is running I can press the pedal all the way to the floor, its hard to do this but it eventually goes down.
With the ignition off the pedal is rock solid near the top, but as soon as I start the car I can press it down to the floor.

The brakes work still even when they are on the floor.

Is the a problem? And what could it be.

I don't think there is air in the system as with the ignition off It would be soft.

Please let me know

Well if the pedal goes to the floor generally there are one of two issues: bad master cylinder/booster or too little brake fluid.

RS_X5 03-23-2008 08:02 AM

Brake fluid is at max level

Is the booster an easy change or servo off and rebleed?

How do I test if its the servo or booster.

I would bleed the system and start over. Fluid is the cheapest issue you could have, so start there.

i agree with Wag. bleed the system with new fluid to address this first. then diagnose further if necessary.

Thanks. I would have thought that if it was fluid the the pedal would be spongy when the ignition is off but it rock solid.

Hi all
Can someone test to see if their pedal sinks if pressed really hard. Some one I know at BMW said this should happen.. I'm not sure.

Wagner 03-23-2008 02:45 PM

At first, when relatively un-pressurized you could push the pedal nearly all the way down, however a 2nd/3rd pump etc...would pressurize the systems and stiffen the pedal.

And would it rremain pressurized or would it sink to to floor again until pumped. I can pump mine and it goes hard then gradually sinks to the floor again

gradually, yes.
