DIY Heater/Water Valve repair temp fix

DIY for Heater Valve if only the rubber gasket is broken.
I do not guarantee for this to work, nor do I take any responsibility for any damages that may occur, so proceed at your own risk.

Now, I have looked at a lot of pictures online of other people’s heater valves that have gone bad in this manner. I have noticed that the broken rubber pieces were in the valve body and did not lead to other problems. Now that doesn’t mean it can’t happen just that those who had the rubber gasket thing break apart didn’t not have any problems other than that. So on to the fix.

I decided to see how my valve was and when you disconnect the 3 tubes and remove the 6 T10Hex screws you can slowly open up the valves and you will noticed that the rubber gasket is cracked. So I didn’t feel like paying $200 for a new one since I only need the rubber part.

1) I found this part below at Pepboys, Autozone, etc here is a picture. I paid 5.99 and there is 2 of them inside.
Attachment 44629Attachment 44630
2) So you only need the center part of this so you can take a nice sharp cut at the base just like the picture below.
Attachment 44632Attachment 44631
3) Now, here is a comparison to what you should have at this point.
Attachment 44633
4) The Middle ones are new ones. What you want to do is take it and make it inside out like the next picture. The side flaps will go flat like the original once you put it back the valve top/bottom will squeeze it flat.
Attachment 44634
5) Then you need to puncture a hole the same or as close as possible to the original size in the center of the new one.
Attachment 44635
6) Then you want to work it over the head by wiggling it over the head. You can add a tiny bit of coolant or oil to make it easier.
Attachment 44636
7) This next picture is where I slowly insert into the top half of the valve gasket and you have to do it slowly as not to pinch the rubber top gasket and you’ll see that the they fit nice and snug and they’re the same height as the originals they just don’t fit the that grove perfectly but they function just fine. Also when reassembling the valve gasket there will be a small gap but when you tighten the screws’. Make sure you do it like your tightening your tires. 1 5 2 3 4 1 bolts pattern. And the gap will close.
Attachment 44637
And your done. Also I over tightened one of the screws and broke it. So I say it again be gentle and slowly tighten but not too tight like me.

I also found this blog. This guy John repaired his that had a short any how here is the link and he has a nice DIY so i think it should also go on the DIY page.

Let me know if it needs any more pictures etc to help it more understandable. I tested my car and I have full heat/cold so its working. Now i dont know for how long this will last but its working atm.

now I have another question maybe you guys can answer. I have replaced the aux fan, added freon and its not the valve. My X will not cool until i drive (ie even if i drive backwards for a min) ok so i dont have to go forward i can backward but as long as i drive the car for 2-5 min the aux fan (new one) will start and the ac will cool to exactly 60F no lower but dead on 60F. So any ideas what else there can be?

I will update i guess every week or so on my homemade gasket and will take pictures to document also. But if any one has a clue as to why my aux fan doesnt turn on till I drive the car, please let me know...its driving me crazy.

Ok, so wanted to give an update. Thus far from September 2010 to January 5th: I have had great heating function and no codes or leakage anywhere. The only thing i have a problem with is that the control panel if set on like 72 or hight the temperature if measured from the vents are blowing around 140F. Now i was wondering if anyone that doesnt have a problem with their valves can take a measurement with the heater on at like 70 80 then 90 on the control panel and the actual temp form the vents. My next tackle will be the expansion valve thats buried in the dash. I still have issues with AC system even after new high pressure sensor, new aux fan,...only then left thats cheap is expansion valve then worst case compressor.

anyway ill take the valve apart agian soon to see the rubber seal conditon and will post pics this time.

OK I know I know ive been saying that i will open it up and see how the rubber is doing but I couldnt help it that its been a bit over 1yr since i did this fix and knock on wood it is all working great. I have cold AC and HOT heat flowing. It seems that things are great. Any way just an update after 1yr of use and things are working great!!! cheapest fix on this car so far! :D:D

Where is this located?

Thanks for the tip Artman. I gave you credit in my thread.
I also show how to use similar parts to fix the valve seat seals.
Heater Control Valve Rebuild for $12

When you did this repair, how much coolant did you have to remove? Did you remove it from both ends of the valve body? Thanks

semcoinc 12-19-2016 07:11 PM

This is great insight into that valve Artman!

A new aftermarket valve that I installed earlier this year now appears to be being difficult.

No heat until major doses of throttle even with coolant temps at normal.

Been suspecting the valve for a while now and today I whacked on the top metal cylinders with a stubby wrench and then heat began to flow and the more forward hose became warm.

So, if this valve continues to stick it's going to the trash can. I'll give it a few more whacks to get it into compliance and then I'm out!

Thanks.

Mike

Hi semcoinc, my x5 e53 2005 4.4i heating is not working. I recently had my air con done and now I just have cool air even when I put the wheel on 3 red dots. I was thinking it might be the heater control valve and then I saw your post. So, hitting it on top actually worked? I am wondering if I might do this too.

cheers

Tapping it on top can sometimes unstick the valve. If it was stuck it won't last long though. If you put the heat on and it is blowing cold, then tap on the top of the HCV and the air suddenly blows hot, it is a good sign that it is the HCV that is bad. The tapping is just a temporary fix and will narrow down the issue.

The cone of the plunger doesn't appear to be removable
Was anyone able to remove it?
I tried the parts from this tutorial but they don't work well.

There are proper rebuild kits for $30
https://www.ebay.com/itm/173087670820

But I don't know if it's worth it, you can buy a new one for $30 as well
https://www.ebay.com/itm/282323254480

Granted Topaz is a cheap Chinese brand but it had great reviews.

The doubt I'm having of going with the rebuild kit is that I would have no choice but to stretch the rubber to get it over the plunger cone. It will stretch the rubber and create micro tears. The other disadvantage is that I only found those kits in Russia, Ukraine and Poland, so that's about 30 day shipping time.

I saw lots of YouTube videos and on most on them, this plunger comes apart. On some, however, it doesn't.
I definitely see that in my case it doesn't come apart.

In the end I was able to twist off the top. But be careful, there's a thin plastic inside. Very easy to break.
Make sure you use some kind of cloth when grabbing the cope with visegrips to prevent damaging the metal.

This kit includes everything including the cones, but I think it's too expensive
