Aftermarket nav/radio?

Has anyone put an aftermarket nav/radio in the E53 ? If so what's a good aftermarket brand I should look at and how much did it cost to get it installed or how did you install it yourself? I need as much help as possible please and thank you!!

Which system do you have for factory? If you have DSP or NAV currently, it makes upgrading alot more complex. If you have a basic cd player and no DSP, your choices are limitless (kinda).

What he said Carlos, if you don't have DSP or Navigation, you can just get a Dynavin D99 or something similar and have a great system. Bypassing the DSP is a pain.

I have a nav unit :( does that mean it's dsp?

No, if you have a DSP menu you have DSP. If you don't have a DSP menu, No DSP.
NAV does make it a little more difficult if you want to keep your on board computer functions.

Well I don't have a dsp menu button, but what on board computer functions?

the things that show up in your instrument cluster like: AVG MPG, RANGE, AVG MPH, TIME, etc.
If you don't ever use those or don't care, don't worry about it. Else you need to buy a non-NAV OBC and if using a single din aftermarket radio, install the OBC in the standard spot under the radio and above the HVAC, or if wanting to use a double din aftermarket, you'll have to relocate the OBC to some other location in the car with custom wiring.

Okay that makes sense but will those on board functions still work on the instrument cluster where the odometer is? I definitely want a double din with a big display screen but what is OBC? I apologize for not knowing much this is my first BMW

sorry, OBC = on board computer. Your on board computer is part of the factory NAV setup. In order to keep the functions in your instrument cluster, you need to locate an OBC from a non-NAV X5. Then figure out where to install it if you plan on putting in a double din radio.

here is a non-NAV X5 setup, you'd need the part with all the buttons. There's a couple threads here that describe how to keep the OBC after getting rid of NAV.
