Sad day :(

So last Friday my wife had a lil accident.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps91e6db3b.jpg

She's fine, the x, not so much. Tagged a guardrail at 40-45 mph.
Early est. look like it's going to be totaled. Everything from the front bumper to the rear bumper were hit.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n...psf5ca11f5.jpg

It was a good rig for the time we had it, but I doubt I'll replace it with another x. I really like the facelift, but I really want a v8 (I refuse to own an n62). If I find the right deal on a prefacelift 4.4 I might do that. But for now I'm gonna just drive the 7's and start looking for something else.
Spent the day yesterday stripping all my stuff out of it.
I might buy it back if the ins. gives a good enough deal, but it would only be to part out. I have no desire to fix it up.

I was a little disturbed that the airbags didn't go off. She hit pretty much head on on a curved section of rail. Then glanced off and scrapped the whole side. Figured the wheel bag should have deployed. And maybe the side curtains. A witness said it looked like the car was going to flip on its side. Aren't there tilt sensors to detect that for the srs system?
Anyway. It was fun while it lasted. Almost 5 yrs of reliable transportation, she'll be missed.

Sorry to hear bout the X....glad the wifey is ok though!

Ricky Bobby 05-11-2014 09:57 AM

and yet another case where the X's safety is shown, glad to hear your wife is ok and these trucks are definitely tanks, don't think it would have been the same story if she was driving a Kia!

14thbmw 05-11-2014 10:19 AM

Curious about the airbags also. Maybe not frontal enough to depoly the steering wheel bag, but perhaps a side curtain?

Do you know if the seatbelt tensioners tightened as they are supposed to do?

Qsilver7 05-11-2014 10:37 AM

Glad your wife is ok....sorry 'bout the X. :( (btw...looks like a nice set of dedicated winter tires were mounted...shame to see those go to waist)

If no none was sitting on the passenger side...I don't think a curtain bag nor the steering wheel bad would deploy based on the damage done in the pics. Sometimes the deployment of a bag can cause more injury than not if the accident isn't really severe (or totally frontal).

The occupancy mat sensor probably is the reason the passenger curtain bag or dash air bag didn't deploy on that side (again,, if no one was sitting in the seat).

Since the intro of the dual stage airbag system, (started 3/99 build date)...the bags and seat belts are designed to protect & deploy based on various data and severity of the crash. As you can see in the chart below...the MRS (multiple restraint system) has 4 thresholds. If no bags deployed & your wife was wearing her seatbelt...it means that the crash sensors that where affected by her crash only registered threshold 1. If your wife hadn't been wearing her seatbelt...her steering wheel air bag probably would have deployed...but that may have caused some bruising as she & the airbag (moving at approx 200 MPH) moved toward each other (instead of being held in place by the seat belt) if she hadn't of been belted.

Very unlucky but the main thing is your wife is fine and that is all that matters.

In the Kia the airbag would have deployed as designed.

I wish people would do some research before knocking a product.

Never really like the idea of something blowing up in my face just because people refuse to wear seat belts.

Thanks guys. I'm glad my wife was fine. I'm sure in something else, things could be very different.
And despite the bags not going off, she was fine.

Thanks for the info Q. It did have nice Pirelli scorpions on it. I was tempted to toss the stock 17's back on, but the front one was damaged and will be part of their est. of repair. I stripped everything else I could though. I had a BMW metal divider for the cargo area, a BMW roof rack, the roll out cargo cover, and BMW rubber mats. I wanted to swap the power fold mirrors, but there is no one near me with regular ones to replace them with.

Dang! Sorry for your loss, but very glad the wifey is okay.

Hope you find your 4.4. I'm jonesing for a diesel, but ppl here don't sell theirs until their fubared. :P

Lol. Well, I always told her, if your gonna crash, make it good. Looks like she did at least one thing I told her. ;)

Glad the wife is ok. That is what matters.

GSXRliterbikz 05-15-2014 06:43 PM

Well, like I thought, insurance totaled it.
But the buy back was almost 6k :0 So I let them keep it.
They also offered me a good price for it. I was expecting retail on it to be around 10k. I was shocked when they offered me a lot more than that.
So C'est la vie

motordavid 05-15-2014 06:45 PM

Also glad your CEO is ok...and, you got a decent compensation for your X.
As much as any of us like our cars/scoots, they are just stuff.

She's driving an 01 740i sport now. She likes it so she'll probably just daily it from now on.
I'm on the hunt for a clean e46 m3 vert now. Probably gonna wait till fall though.

It looks like an easy fix

:iagree:

Easy fix if you know how to do BONDO work.

:bustingup

GSXRliterbikz 05-16-2014 11:50 AM

Easy, but not cheap. And it pushed in the front wheel arch. So the front clip that the fender attaches to would need to be replaced. Which means cutting and welding.

bcredliner 05-16-2014 01:23 PM

Good to hear no injuries and you are satisfied with insurance decision.

Tank is an understatement. Had 05 e53, my girl spun out in the rain on the freeway, took out a light post, ripped the rear suspension out which was about 30 feet up the hill, bent the roof... she and her friend just walked away.

I wouldn't bother with bondo I would just get a bumper a fender and 2 doors from the junk yard

admranger 05-16-2014 10:25 PM

You can probably just buff that out.

As for the E46M3 vert, get one now, they are cheap as dirt. However, you need to head on over to m3forum.net and do some reading. E46M3's aren't exactly problem free and like an X5, require an informed pre-purchased inspection.

TerminatorX5 05-16-2014 10:32 PM

another one bites the dust... thanks to a girlfriend/wife/significant other... lol...

but nevertheless, it is good thing that she is all well...
