Sound loss - radio, PDC, seatbelt 2011 LCI

Hi

Looking for some advice on sound loss in 2011 LCI e70 - UK spec.

Had car from new and covered 100K miles (fyi on topical chats> no gearbox oil change and all OK).

Car is fairly high spec (Vin is L793067)
On sound there is:
6FL USB-/AUDIO INTERFACE
6NF EXT.CON.OF THE MUSIC PLAY.I.MOBILPH
6NR APPS
6VC CONTROL COMBOX
601 TV FUNCTION
609 NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL
633 PREP.MOB. PH. BUSINESS BLUET.INTERF.
654 DAB TUNER
677 HIFI SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL
694 PREPARATION FOR CD CHANGER

So issue is with complete sound loss.

History:
about 18 months ago I had complete sound loss from system. Checked fuses all ok and ended up putting into BMW technician friend who could find no fault (suspected amp). He re-coded / flashed module (assuming re-flash of factory setting to amp) and sound returned.

Recent:
Was listening to song fairly loudly and switch car off whilst turning sound down and lost sound again.
During the past couple years another gremlin I have found is that if I took a corner sharply (- the kind that causes stuff on the passenger seat to slide off) the sound would go off, but if you turned up volume button sound level returned and increased as normal. I assumed this to be linked to some emergency function that shuts down certain items in car in event of crash etc.

Have checked fuses again and all ok. I have disconnected MOST plug located under passenger footwell and left overnight to see if that forced a MOST reset (no joy). I have ordered up a MOST loop plug to see if I can isolate bit of kit that is causing issue. Though I've never stripped back of car and not sure where all kit will be (car is seven seater).

I could give it to mate who is BMW tech and he can suss issue (or do a re-lash) but nowts free and cost will be iro $80 bucks and if car is going to suffer reoccurring gremlin I would rather try and isolate, learn on my own how to get working again.

Any one have any guidance, ideas.

Car runs really well and I want to keep for another few years so need to solve as nae sound is rather, well, quiet...

Sounds like there is a problem with the head unit.

When you say head unit, do you mean the radio box behind lower switches or screen.

What makes you think its the head unit?
Cheers

Yes. You mentioned that you can restore the sound by turning the volume up. That sounds like it's being muted which is done by pressing the volume button. The volume is restored by pressing the volume button again or turning the volume up.

have you inspected all connections in the trunk/boot/hatch for loose connections, evidence of any water intrusions OR light corrosion?

I do NOT think there is some sort of 'emergency shutdown function' (IMO, this is from the 'lets use leeches to suck out bad blood' school of 'how humans think things work based on superstitious observational nonsense'...) You seem to have created a 'story' to explain an observation. How about a loose connector that flexes under sideways G force?

I also dont think 'turning down loud music when turnout off the car' causes system failures.... just a WAG on my part.

The only safety feature that would make sound stop working is you main fuse on the battery blows after an accident.

Check connections first. I too suspect something not plugged in.

Did consider loose connection / bad earth when sound dropped on sharp cornering. Will strip car at weekend and give it a wiggle on amp, n stuff. Might take out radio / CD head unit as well and see if there is anything obvious.

Fancy putting in a Avin type screen anyhow.

Seen this

but will hang fire till I resolve sound.

Tried so far

Stripped out head unit checked rear fuse (OK) refitted unit - still no sound.

Checked MOST bus light in boot (trunk). Module behind amp (bluetooth?), this unit receives signal first, then amp then TV module. Disconnected and plugged all back in, no loose wires bad earths etc. - still no sound

Not sure if MOST bus goes to other units but I could not see any.

Advice, ideas on if other units still to be checked?

Keep in mind that this isnt like your old cars...

Radio>>>AMP>>>Speakers

The amp is on 100% of the time..the speakers are on. They will 'play' certain warning sounds and chimes, even wht the radio off.

Hence, if you find ALL sounds are suppressed, not just radio, it may be telling you it is an amp/speaker issue, not a radio issue

Yeah, good call. On probability it could likely be more amp as its unlikely all speakers would be out.

That said the signal on the MOST bus is getting across 1st module to amp then onto TV... If its doing this then the MOST bus cut out plug loop I've ordered will unlikely prove definitively which part system is problem. Though if amp picks up MOST bus signals (radio, tv, HDD, chimes, ect.), but internal amp problem stops it then deciphering and sending sound to speakers this is a plausible scenario..., especially as logic 7 amp failures are well known.

Cheap second hand amp, where to find mmm...
