Sorry you are still having issues. Check LKQ and Row52 in your area. You might get lucky and find a cheap ($150-250) used transmission at the "you pull it" junk yard. The 6HP does not go bad often so there is not a lot of demand. It was used until 2013 in the diesel. And get aggressive with "Make Offer" on ebay. Smart sellers will see that there 40+ for sale and take a few hundred in profit.

That's too bad it didn't work out. Thanks for sharing.
So I may have missed it in all the reading but what are your plans?: 1. Buy and install used? 2. Buy rebuilt? 3. Rebuild existing trans yourself? 4. Have existing rebuilt? 5. Buy used and rebuild so you have a spare? |
seems like #1 is the best and most cost effective option if you're going to DIY.
Glad to see used 6 speeds are around 1,000-1,200 on ebay. I had the rear diff go out but thought the transmission went out at the time it wasn't moving in Drive. I didn't think the diff gears were breakable with the 3.0si. Thanks for keeping us updated. Hoping for the best! |

Yes. I would agree, if money were an issue, I would buy used and install. But if it's doable I would certainly want to have it rebuilt or replace it with a rebuilt. I'd be hard pressed to go through all that trouble of R&R if I wasn't sure it would last me another 100K miles. Around here no one rebuilds them anymore. I've specifically asked. They just order one from a rebuild shop. Whether it is a BMW Indy, BMW dealer or trans shop. For that reason I've wanted to consult with ZF, order the parts, and practice rebuilding my own. I've got a spare trans from an old 2003 325xi and a trans from 2001 X5 4.4 laying around that I was planning to do when I get time. But even then I'd have to worry about my trans rebuild skills, since I've never done it before. I am pretty OCD and have faith in my abilities. But it would be peace of mind nice to know someone experienced rebuilt it and to have a warranty behind it. |
Though, a transmission, with all the moving components, is never guaranteed to last another 100k unless it's a new car haha I'd expect a used or even rebuilt transmission would last 60k/2-4 years.
In my case with a $4000 X5 4.4 a few years back, I didn't want to spend more than $500 getting the transmission repaired so I got rid of it for $1000. 1. Buy and install used? $1000 and 2 days 2. Buy rebuilt? $1500 + 2 days 3. Rebuild existing trans yourself? doesn't seem like the option here since OP didn't rebuild the valve body OP $800 or so in, I'd probably grab a used transmission and install it with the rebuilt valve body.Anyway, let's here from him... |
I'd have to disagree on the life expectancy of a rebuilt trans. If using OEM components I would expect it to last 100K. There should be no difference in life expectancy in a rebuild unless the rebuilder is incompetent or uses inferior parts or fluid. I have a rebuilt trans I put in my Ford Excursion at 140K and now have 240K on the clock.
Again, my opinion and personal experience. But agreed, let's wait for input from Crystalworks. |
I am going to put as low a mileage unit as I can find. Use my rebuilt valve body and egs (egm? Whatever BMW calls the mechatronics computer) in the replacement. Going over the tis it doesn't look like too bad a process, but requires some special tools, and will be tedious. Perfect way to spend a couple weekends.
Then, at my leisure (or maybe not? Life gets in the way, our house is a constant source of projects) I'll rebuild the old trans and replacement valve body. I didn't rebuild mine because I did not have a spare. |

Hope your search for a good low mileage trans is fruitful. |
