Traveling from NJ to SC
I want to do it in one shot, I think I can achieve at least 25 mpg based on some preliminary tests I have done. The amazing thing is the X5 is getting better mileage than my G37

We have done a day trip of ~ 675+ miles from western NC to NJ, a couple three times per year, for the past decade. Our '01 E53 has a 5 spd manual, and thus our highway rpms are substantial, and detrimental to big mpg numbers...but, we often get high 22s and occasionally 23+ on those trips, based on arithmetic, not the mpg readout.
The difficulty in predicting 'expected' mpg is the potential stop and go traffic jams around DC or Balto, and any other unforeseen construction or accident slow downs along your route(s). Also 'load' plays a role, as does ambient temps and gusty winds, imo, from viewing the anecdotal 'results' over a decade worth of those trips. Otoh, our '02 VetteVert has made that trip regularly too, and that sumbitch does 28-30+ mpg on every trip...fwiw. GL, mD PS: EZ Pass is your friend, in terms of rolling through the several tolls on I-95 vs stopping to get in line to pay. |
I am travelling late at night arriving early in the morning. I expect to be able to use auto cruise at 65mph for most of the trip. I think I can do it, will update the group with the results.

A 65 cruise will add some time. It is frequent trip for us, over the years. That night shot will reduce the DC-Balt-NJ traffic considerably. GL, mD |
At 65 you will get great mpg. I have trouble keeping her under 90. When I did do a trip around 70-75 I was getting 21 mpg on my 4.4. You can def get good mpg on your 3.0 at 65!

Thanks for the input guys. Naz24, you are lucky to travel over 90 and not get caught;) Can't blame you though, the X5 is a sleeper
I will be travelling with my kids, when they are in the car Daddy behaves. I will probably do between 65 and 75. My goal is to achieve at least 25 mpg. |

It must be the altitude where I'm at. Drive safe |
Speed will rule the day in your quest for 25 mpg. Last May I drove from Houston to Phoenix via I-10, many miles and hours through TX with 80 mph speed limit, set cruise for 85 mph, was showing between 24 ~ 26 mpg with 35d. Have driven 55 mph highway other times for comparison and can see over 30 mpg. 25 mpg with 3.0 at 70? Maybe. 75 to 80? Maybe not.

I get 45 mpg on my X5 35d when driving at 30-50mph on "local" flat roads... Anything above 50mph and wind resistance gets into play!
