Diesel/Gas?

We are looking to "trade up" from our 06 3.0 to a 2010-2012.
What are the real advantages/disadvantages to going with 2010 Diesel
One we are looking at has 36,000 miles....

Just the price of diesel. It's often higher than premium here in Atlanta.

Foolish to decide on a drivetrain based on cost of fuel...

You are buying a $70k car- cents per mile should not be a top 10 criteria, IMO

HOWEVER, IMO the Diesel is a better driving car than the 3L gas...much more torque. Just a brute moving along freeways, up and down hills, etc. Better driveability than the smaller gas in terms of revving, up/down shifting,

I agree with ard, I test drove a few x5 models, to include the x5m, but I fell in love with the basic daily driving characteristics of the diesel. Sure, some of the others had more excitement factor when the go pedal is touching the floor, but I rarely if ever drive like that. The diesel's torque just brings you right up to traffic speed with very little effort which is a very pleasant feeling. Although diesel prices are typically above gas in my area, the added economy of the diesel makes up for that enough for me.

I'm not looking at fue economy or cost, this is my wifes car, gets driven about 6k per year, and she NEVER goes to the gas station....I fill it when she gets low
There are a few Diesels available at about the sme price as the gas....so ??
I don't really care which...its all about EQUIPMENT and CONDITION.

I'd say just say, for what your looking to do with it, the limited miles per year if you had 2 with all the options you wanted in both and you flipped a coin to decide, you wouln't be able to make the wrong choice.
Only note, in most area's the D may have a higher resale value from what I understand, but the pros here will either agree or correct that statment if not true.

Go for the Diesel.

Same situation I was in a few month ago.

Diesel was my favorite from the beginning.

We went and test drove both.
First the Diesel and I did not even drove shotgun on the gas X5.
She came back 3 minutes later and said "This thing wont move at all".
the 2011 Diesel it was. I need to say that was a non turbo 2010 3l gas she drove.

The torque makes a huge difference and since you fill the gas, you will be happy to be able to get 500 miles out of one tank.

Don't know about FL but near DC only 1 out of 4 or 5 gas stations sells diesel. Not an issue for us but certainly worth keeping in mind.

Low annual mileage, short trips, infrequent use, are not the best operating conditions for a diesel. Nor for a gasoline BMW, but a gasoline model may be more tolerant.

I prefer the driving experience of the gasoline model myself. I tried to justify the diesel on cost, but couldn't due to local diesel fuel price per litre. More depreciation with the diesel model where I live. Seems like that may be true in parts of the US as well, if they are selling at similar prices used after the diesel option cost more originally.
