Alternator housing seal change in E70

Has anybody had to swap Alternator housing seal in E70 because of slow oil leak ? How much did INDI or Dealer shop charge you for it ? Is dropping sub-frame absolutely required. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

lol, that slow oild leak will turn into a bleed. At the worst time ever mine leaked a quart a mile. You should know that was the day I drove it to indi. :)

To drop the sub frame and replace the $7.00 gasket I spent about $900.00.
But while there I also did a transmission fluid flush and found a leaking internals too.

Good luck to you, do it as soon as it is in your budget.

Mines leaking too and I've been checking out DIY's for a while. Never heard anyone mention dropping the subframe. Most DIY's have you lifting the weight off the engine and removing the driver side engine mount. ONE guy reported it was accessible by removing the driver side CV. That was a DIY though so possible that route is longer time wise just negates the engine lift.

Ok, are we talking about the alternator bracket gasket?

If so, it was my understanding that to do this job on the 745 all you have to do is the process you described.
It also is my understanding that to do that on the x5 you have to drop the sub frame.

I may have been lied to :p:.

Can any one else comment on this please.

Keep in mind that "drop" can be shorthand for loosen a bit to get 5mm of access, or 50mm, but may not be total 'removal'.. Still a PITA

Also, the BMW tis says one thing and may SAs and mechanics will not tell you precisely what they use.

I *DO* agree that we need input from someone that has done it.

;)

Alternator bracket gasket IS done. I was told that sub-frame on my 08 x5 had to comedown due tot transfer case blocking the access to the last bolt. I am 1K poorer:cussing: but i hope no more leaks from now on. :). Old bracket was completely dry. Car had 97K on it.

There's some good discussion in the comments here:

Keep in mind if you paid to have it done and the dropped the subframe this does not mean you were ripped off in any way as they very well may have taken the faster route rather than the easier.

Yes. I6 has plenty of problems but this one is limited to the V8

Sorry, I should have been clearer.
Yes, by drop, I did mean suspend the it in the air, and loosen it. I did not mean to fully remove it.
No matter what, I understood this to be a requirement.
