He said they "generally" are a waste of money unless you have sensors located near a reflective point on the car. I have laser detection on mine but it never went off. We tested it. He stood in front my car and pointed the gun at my license plate. No signal. He raised his arm towards the hood and it went off. Laser uses reflective surfaces for its read.
