who thought that a small tune up will unveil the mother of all smokes :valve stem seals!
last weekend decided to change the oil since it was due and we were about to leave next morning to camping..
I picked up some Motul 5W40 8100X-cess, a filter and 2 CCV valves from the dealer since it is an easy 10 min job and knew it hasnt been done before;
i was expecting the worse...
Picked up 8 NGK iridium ix too but didnt have time to do them anymore...
as you will see from the pics, they were both shot..
filled her up a little over the full mark by mistake...drove it like that all weekend...but what I noticed is that after 3 min of idling, the car starts to smoke...to the point that its getting really embarrassing and have to turn off the engine...the car did burn 1qt of oil every 2500miles or so on bmw oil..we'll see how it goes with Motul.
my questions are:
1.Does the car start to smoke a lot more in warmer weather ?It hasnt done that when we had 45-60 degree weather...
2.Can new CCV valves accentuate the smoke from the stem seals?
3.Is it possible that the extra oil was burning off and should see improvements in the next few weeks?(im not getting my hopes up on this one)
4.If it is indeed the valve stem seals, how should i approach the dealer on this one?Ive heard stories on this board where someone had his seals replaced at no cost by the bmw dealership..(again, even less chances than winning the lottery but its worth trying)
5.Any other tests that I can do to really narrow it down to the stem seals?dont wanna change them just to find out that the problem persists..
6. How do you guys feel about all that crud on the old ccv's? it doesnt look normal to me..
Here some pictures...
