There MAY BE another possibility: they tag it to an earlier service visit when the car WAS under warranty and send it through that way. Yes, it is not 'how it is supposed to work'.
I cannot see a dealer offering such an open ended gesture where the cost could be many thousands onto a goodwill account- if they knew what was wrong, and their exposure, they could make the call, but otherwise I think they know this will be BMWNAs dime.
Of course we dont know one way or the other...
