BMW electronics are very sensitive to voltage changes, you can get a variety of error messages that are misleading.

For that reason and because it is easy to do and should be free, I would take both batteries back to the store you bought the new one and have them load tested. Even if the battery takes a charge that does not mean it is good.

If the charged battery will start your X then I would read the alternator voltage output from the OBC by unlocking the cluster. Regardless of the result I would still have the battery(s) load tested.
