"Probably the fuel cap" is a lazy SA. Bet they didnt document it on the work order and didnt read the codes, right?
I had a 2010 that had a CEL at 9k miles. The light went away, but I had it documented, read and cleared. Then at 24k through 32k a slew of issues returned. Since the code at 9k was related, when BMW bought the lemon back they wound up having to use the 9k miles as the 'start date'. I got back 93% of purchase price on a car with 32k miles.
So I recommend documenting issues. Might be nothing. SAs are trained to minimize and deflect. Lots of people let the first issue or two slide, and then have no leverage.
Oh, Ive driven over a million miles and never got a CEL for a loose gas cap...go figure. Feels like the old 'must be a batch of bad gas' story...
