g300d, yeah I wondered the same.
the last thing you wanna do is scratch the polished rod of the gas shock. any scratches on it could cause tears to the rubber sealing elements and you're then buying new gas shocks...
BUT it does seem that the spring stays at the end all the time and not slding up and down the polished rod.
I did see in a video of one of the e39's running these, he installed a brand of gas shock, with these springs,called Nitro-Lift
