The alarm siren has it's own internal battery that gets recharged by the car's battery. (see 2nd paragraph in info below)

This is how the alarm can still sound off with a dead or nearly dead car battery. And if the car's battery wasn't @ 8%...and had enough charge...when you inserted the key into the ignition...EWS would have sent a signal to the GM that a recognized key was in the ignition...and it would have turned off the DWA alarm siren (see very last paragraph in info below)...but in your case...the battery was too weak to carry-out those instructions.
