But, if it was mine, I'd check the belt first to be sure it isn't the cause (can you hear it with the X running and the hood open standing next to it?), just because that is an easier/cheaper fix.

You also might check your engine oil viscosity since it takes so long to warm up. Not related to the whine I'd guess, but getting the right winter oil weight might help warm it up faster and prevent wear during the warm up time. FWIW mine is warm in 2 miles after sitting outside all day no matter what the temp outside. (If the oil is fine I suppose you might have a cooling system thermostat stuck open - again I'm no expert).

Hopefully others here can give you more input; I'm just guessing.

Thank you so much for your response..... and yes my poor baby has to sit outside in wintertime. I hate it, i tried to rent inside garage but in my area (Brooklyn) interior parking garage rental costs as much as a house rental in other states and its so hard to find one so yes it has to sit outside... I-am sure this is cold weather related 100% as today I sat and warmed car up for 15 minutes, until the water level got out of the blue, and the oil temp gauge moved by a few millimeters. (4.8is) - when i started driving the sound was 1/4 not as bad as yesterday, when i started car, waited 20 seconds, and started to drive it right away the whining sound was loud.. Todays morning temp was same as yesterday 29F. So this is def affected by the cold weather - if car is cold it will whine in 1st and 2 gear on accerelation - once it warms up the sound is less - once its fully warmed up - the sound is almost non existant.. I was recommended to replace the transfer case fluid/oil - drive 500-1000 miles - and see if it helps.. so I guess that is something I will have to do, its just that some others drive with the transfer case for 120k+ miles and its ok, I am just at 78k so having to replace the fluid already is giving me a headache.
