Trans. Failsafe Prog / Code / Alternator

Hello all,

about a month ago I'd received the "Trans. Failsafe Prog" message on my dash. Turns out I needed a new battery which I was able to purchase from AAA for $140 including installation. I checked with my local dealership to see if I'd need to have the truck programmed to the new battery. I was assured that I would NOT have to do so with my ('06) model.

Today I was at the gas station and the message showed up again. I could not start the truck and it asked for "Code." Thanks to this forum I was able to find out what to do for that issue-even thought at first the radio was not coming on for me to be able to put the "0000" in for the code. I let the truck sit unbothered for 10-15mins and then with the key in 1st position the radio came back on. I was then able to enter the code. The truck however, still would not crank. AAA came out and gave me a jump and I cranked and was running just fine. Once I shifted into gear and was about to drive the truck started shaking really bad and then cut off. I called AAA again and this time they sent a tow truck.

I was notified by my mechanic that I need a new alternator. It's going to cost $700 which include labor.

A few weeks ago I'd had trouble with the truck switching to 4x4 drive on its own and all my dash lights came on and the radio was cutting off and on. I'm hoping/assuming all of these issues were a result of the alternator as well. I know it's a major portion of the electrical system running properly. If anyone has any in site or feed back, please share?!
