Hey Mike

You're right in that there are plenty of options out there. My first step was to work out how diesel engines actually make more power, as it's not the same as a turbo petrol engine which is pretty much just a matter of adding the right amounts of fuel/boost and timing. With diesels, you can pretty much just keep adding more and more fuel to make more power, beyond that it's a matter of controlling the smoke tables (so it doesn't take off looking like a coal fired train) and the torque tables to protect the transmission.

I found this article helpful:

EndTuning - Tech - Tuning Boxes

I did a fair bit of reading, and decided to go with Bluefin as they've been in the game quite some time coming from Europe where they deal with a lot of diesel performance tunes.

Plus the Bluefine is an actual ECU reflash, where a lot of the 'plug in' solutions are just interceptors that increase fuel rail pressure and nothing more. Anything that has a plug in box that allows you to 'select' the power, is just raising the fuel pump pressure, which will net you 20-30hp before the engine starts to smoke excessively, then they advise you to turn it back one notch. These piggy back boxes don't take into account the safety limiters inbuilt to the ECU (often overriding them) and don't control the torque tables (which can put undue strain on components, most at risk being the transmission). A good re-flash will do more than just raise fuel pressure.

If money was no object I'd take the car to HP-F and get them to do a custom ECU tune. That would net you the most power, safely, and allow you to tune it to your driving preference. The Bluefin is a good compromise, at roughly half the price, you download your ECU data, send it away and they will tune it remotely, then you upload the new map and keep going until you're happy.

I did this with a COBB Accessport on my Mazda MPS and was thrilled with the results. In this day and age, I am not convinced that a stock car needs an expert tuner with a dyno to get decent results. Remote tuning may be a bit more conservative, but you'll still get a decent result. Here's hoping! I might try pull the data down tonight and get it mapped before everyone goes on Xmas break.
