If you have a bad transfer pump, the side of the gas tank with the fuel pump will be almost empty and the side of the tank with the sending unit for the gas gauge will say half full or half empty depending whether you are an optimist or a pessimist.

Easiest and cheapest way to determine this is to go and fill the truck up. If it take more than 10 gals to fill a half empty tank up to full you have a bad transfer pump. Keep the tank top off and you won't have the sputtering problem.
