I've no help to offer but have a question about the circumstances surrounding the initial failure. By any chance did your car's battery run below the required minimum voltage for com's and/or coding? Or was the vehicle running at the time which would render my question redundant? I only ask because if the battery effectively died in the middle of the coding process you would expect the module to be bricked much the same as interrupting a bios firmware update on your computer if the power goes out during the process and there isn't a battery backup.
My reason for asking is sincere and if that is what happened then it could serve as a warning to the rest of us...personally I've been foolish enough to attempt running diagnostics on my X5 once without supplementing power to the battery and it lost com's 2min into the process. I had no idea these vehicle consume that much power...since then I've always started the car before resetting service codes, running diagnostics and yes, even during coding.
