I just returned from the dealer. The service advisor is doubtful that the door switch could be the cause. The problem is with the encoding step in the FRM replacement procedure. They are waiting for BMW to provide additional troubleshooting instructions.

I don't understand the wait. I am not one to just throw parts at a problem but when a problem like this presents itself, an uncommon one where the exact cause is not obvious, I think it is diagnostically valid to temporarily install known working parts to see if the conditions change in any way. It can be part of a robust troubleshooting "toolbox" but to be useful it requires an open mind, organizational skills and thorough record keeping. I know they have a couple of X5s in there. Just do me a favor and swap in one of the door switches. See what happens. Hell, try another FRM.
