Well,that is not impossible at all. There's flash memory chips in the nav unit. The software can write and read data from the flash. If the software corrupts the flash contents badly enough, the only possibility to recover is to change the chip to new one.
It seems that the beta is working badly, because there's a number of persons who has reported about the problems. I wouldn't update the beta into my nav.
