TiAgX5, your answer seems to fit best but I'm surprised the tube is that far forward in the engine if it is for the transmission. I couldn't find the part diagram showing this on realoem.com. ART-qitec, the SIB you referenced is for a 2006 X5 which makes me believe the part was already updated in later models. Thanks to both.

I did discover what that red handle on top of the battery compartment is for - transmission emergency release, didn't know that. I suppose that's in the owner's manual
