2) Any of those shops can tell you. I do not know of a way for the vehicle to tell you without plugging into it.

3) BMW doesn't release that information. Software updates on your car are not like those for your computer where there is a change log and readme notes.

5) You should ask those shops for a quote as prices vary greatly and ask them who is responsible if a module fails to take the update. Some modules are quite expensive. It can take 3 or 4 hours (or even more) to update the software. So if the shop is charging $150 an hour, you do the math. Some indy shops might charge far less for it. Best bet, call and ask.
