The warmer the engine gets...the further/higher you can rev the engine and fewer lights illuminate.

Hopefully your quest was to know "why" they illuminate...because the answer to what they "do"...is they illuminate as the engine is revved.
Ditto! Mine are all illuminated on a cold start, and go out one by one as the engine warms up. The last red one always stays on. I've never tried it, but I read somewhere the computer will cut the throttle if you rev into the orange lights...
