You want to avoid opening the cooling system on ANY engine unless the engine is cold. If the engine is not cold, then hot coolant will gush out and expose you to potentially serious injury.

Normal checks are done on a cold engine, whether it is running or not. Running is not a condition of checking, cold is the condition you want.
