Ah...you have a 2002 X5 4.4 (consider adding that info in a signature that will permenantly appear at the bottom of all your posts). Based on your forum name...I assumed that you had one of the diesel X5 3.0d models with the M57/M57TU engines.

This means that you have the HIGH instrument cluster...thus your audio equipment communicates over the I-bus (as in the 2nd illustration in my post above).
