Just FYI: In my case the cause for this exact issue (minus the big thump) was the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF).

In my case the dashboard transmission light came on AND caused the transmission to shift gears harshly. After replacing the MAF the transmission issue went away, but I still have other "air flow" related codes to troubleshoot.
