Yeah on the X5 staggered is a good way to go. I had considered going square on my 4.6is and I even have the two additional wheels rear wheels for the front to make it square but the tires are just so huge for front tracking. So I am sticking with the staggered application but I do run 25mm spacers on the front of the X. On my E39 M5 I run rear OEM style 65s all the way around the car but I use a 265 tire on front and a 285 on the back and it works well.
