Wires always work unless they break, however, this is not to say that BT will not work.

I have used Carly a number of times with Bluetooth and had no problems.

I think part of the problem is the older the modules get, the more likely they are to have problems when flashing. Even the dealers have problems from time to time with DME's and other modules bricking.

Chances are it would have bricked using a cable as well.
