So I recently had the P0442 code in our E53 X5, which is a fault for a small evaporative emissions leak. It is commonly caused by a loose gas cap, but in our case the rubber cap seal was worn. I replaced the cap and cleared the code, all good.

Worth a shot before paying for a diagnostic smoke test on the entire system if that is something you have to pay a few hundred dollars for at your local indie mechanic.
