Just a quick guess, but camshaft position sensors are know to go bad....insulation/wiring breaks down inside the sensing coil and the signal starts degrading- intermittent at first.

While you may find www sites that speak to actuators/solenoids/vanos and such, they seem to leave out the sensors- assuming they are always 100% perfect.
