But I think the debugging process and success in that case did not rely on the scan tool. It required a basic understanding of the AC system, knowing what relay to check, etc. If one were already in possession of, and proficient with the tool (like that awesome mechanic is), it would make things easier. But just the tool without the knowledge might not help much.
I'm not advising against scanners at all, but I think in that case with that root cause failure, a good mechanic could have solved it following the same steps as the mechanic, but doing it all without the scanner.
The magic that does not seem to exist there (yet?) would be something that would plug in and, for example, in the OP's case, run a diagnostic test on the fan before he goes and buys a new one to plug in. Just like diagnostics on a PC (that costs half as much as that fan).
