Not always, there is a campsite on the Pacific coast called Kirk Cove that I can back the X5 up to and open the hatch and view the entire Pacific from my "bed". I've also slept in the X5 in Death Valley in the winter. Nothing is better than waking up when its 35 degrees outside and turning on the engine to warm up my tent. I am still unclear on how you're doing this. You're saying you lay the 2nd row flat and put an mattress in, and you can fit laying diagonally with the rear hatch closed?
