Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner, Adam's Wheel Cleaner, CarPro IronX should all work great - you spray them on and they will dissolve the iron particles on the surface and it will turn purple, a slight agitation and then you can rinse off and should be clean as can be! Then maybe a bit of light metal polish to clean up any remaining oxidation
Also, the "nubs" pop out pretty easy from all I've read and aren't easily damaged or broken

Was just wary about if I had to sand it, but then I knew that would damage the aluminum.
