Further digging in the BMW Tech WDS site indicates that the connectors are colored thus: -

X18801 Component connector (12-pin, blue)

X18802 Component connector (12-pin, natural)

(This is a cut'n'paste from the docs)

The check will be that pin #2 on X18801 is a solid brown wire (no colored tracer) and is an earth connection.

There's a small amount of conflict in the BMW Tech WDS from time to time - not surprising, given the changes in the X5 over the model run. And the sheer amount of wiring!
