I solved the water leak by removing, cleaning, and refitting the rubber boots that house the electrical wires running between the vehicle body and tailgate.

Excellent information - thanks! I'll check this soon and let you know if that was the culprit. There's a lot of ECUs in the E70, and I'm not yet familiar with their locations.
