It needs to be running and in park while you fill it until it flows out of the fill hole. It'll take a few more quarts when you start it up and fill it while running.

I'm at 148K miles with 48K miles since I did my trans oil change and the transmission is as strong as ever. As some here have related a doomsday scenario if you change the filter/fluid, it never happened for me.
