There was a TSB about some faulty ballast released in 2004 BMWs....I had Xenon flickering with my '04 M3 and finally it would flicker out and then give you an error message. Under their TSB and warranty, both sets of Xenon light bulbs and ballast were replaced with an upgraded unit and no problems so far. Interestingly enough, with over 130K miles and 5 years of ownership, the Xenons are doing fine on the X5!

I'm dropping off my X5 at the dealer tomorrow morning. 5th time
I'll double check that they tested the ballasts.
On a different note, I think your thread regarding the intake adjuster could be the answer to my whistling noise. I'll have the dealer replace it and let you know the result.
