Installed the iDatalink ADS-BM1 in my '08 X5 4.8 this past weekend.
Very easy to do, just follow the directions and no problems... only about 2 hours total including tying up the cables and cleaning up.
Everything you need (except for a few zip ties and the programming cable) is in the box.

There are also 2 install videos in the support section that show you the simple disassembly and install process.
The complete kit can be found for <$500 on eBay and Amazon, which includes the Remote Start, 2 long distance (2500+ feet) remotes (a 2 way and a 1 way) and it also works with your BMW keyfob (3 presses of the Lock button) as well.
*** You can add Smart Phone Control as well as other 3rd party remotes ***
You will need the ADS-USB programming cable so you can program the system to your vehicle and also capture the BMW keyfob info.
Also, IE for your browser, it will NOT work with Firefox, didn't try any others, but I believe IE is the only browser supported.

Look on eBay, should be around $25...
Simply disconnect 3 connections (2 on the CAS module, brake switch) under the steering column, insert the 2 wiring harnesses, do the VERY SIMPLE web based config/programming, and you're done.
Don't even disconnect the battery...
No coding, no cut wires, no major disassembling of your X (driver's side kick panel (3 screws) & 1 vent (2 screws)).
You can easily remove the system at any time!
