Homelink training from a dip switch remote

Hey, I've looked all over the net and found many others in dispair (many makes and models of vehicles).
Has anyone successfully paired a generic dip switch remote to their homelink buttons?
I have read that Canadian vehicles are a bit different for programming but I've tried it to no avail as well.
And do you need to do the "training of homelink" buttons while parked near the garage door opener?
I can see this as being foolish as the Canadian method says you have to press your fixed code remote button ev ery two seconds and this makes the garage door opener go crazy.
Soooooo frustrating.
