Eccentric sensor error codes after valve cover gaskets?

I recently replaced the valve covers on my X. While doing this I accidentally broke the passenger side sensor. I replaced the sensor with a Genuine BMW sensor and put everything back together. Ever since, I have been getting codes 2A59 "Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor guide" and code 2A5B "Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor reference."

On cold starts where the engine is dead cold I will get a little engine stutter immediately after startup but just a second after, the engine runs fine and I wont have any issues. No issues on a warm start whatsoever.

My indie cleared the codes and they immediately came back. I wasn't having any issues before the valve cover job. They said without further diagnostic (several hours in labor) they don't know 100% what the issue is. Just wanted to pick everyone's brains here on a likely cause or something to look at before I spend more money at the shop. Does something need to be calibrated? anyone else have this issue? Thanks again everyone!
